Eins wird mir sofort bewusst. Vieles in Indonesien wird sich wohl am Wasser abspielen. Die Ostküste Sumatras ist ein Mix aus Sumpf, Salzwasserbäume (Mangroven?) und Dörfer, welche ins Wasser hinausgebaut sind. 

I realised, a lot of indonesia will be on or over the water. The eastcoast of Sumatera is a mix of swamp, magroves and villages, built into the water. 

Das Wasser ist trüb und dunkel, die Hitze beeindruckend und die Welt vor mir völlig unbekannt. Ich entschied wieder ohne Reiseführer zu Reisen. Ich will mich überraschen lassen und auf die Nase fallen... 

The water is dark and dirty, the weather extremely hot and the world in front of me completely unknown. I decided to travel without guide. I WANT to be surprised and to fall on my nose.

Thats really indonesia; this small vehicles are the main transport for short distance. Almost the same like the famous tuck-tuck in Thailand and Laos. 

Erste Eindrücke von einer normalen Kleinstadt in Sumatra: Dumai ist der Hafen der Ostküste und eine wichtige Verbindung von Fähren nach Melakka Von Kuala Lumpur nach Malakka in Malaysia. 

The first impressions of a small town in Sumatera: Dumai is on of the most important harbor on the east- coast and there are important connection to Melakka and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. 

Die allermeisten Indonesier sind Muslime. Hier im Bild eine typische Minimoschee in Dumai. Erinnert mich irgendwie an einen Spielturm aus Pappe... Tatsächlich ist die Architektur aber ziemlich interessant. Völlig verschieden werden die Dinger gebaut, manchmal ohne Minarett. 

The most indonesians are muslimes. In this pictures one of the normal small mosques in Dumai. Sometimes it looks like paperwork of some school kids... Often the architecture is pretty interesting. Sometimes they don't have minarets. 

Gleich aufgefallen: Ich fühl mich eher wie in 1001 Nacht als im Djihad. Der Imam singt eher ein schönes Lied als ein aggressives Gebet wie ich es schon in Israel und Istanbul gehört habe... angenehm. 

I feel pretty good. More like in Alading and less like in the Djihad. The call of the imam out of the tower is mostly quite pretty... 

Als ich ankam war zuerst die Hölle los. Niemand sprach Englisch, aber etwa drei duzent Taxifahrer rissen sich um den einzigen Touristen. Ich machte was ich in solchen Situationen immer tue: Ich sass in eine Strassenbeiz, schlürfte heisse Chilinudeln und machte Gebrauch von meinen Beinen. 

When I arrived it was hell on earth. Nobody speak english and about 50 taxidrivers wanted to take the only foreigner. I did what I always do in such situations: I eat some nudles off the street sellers and I used my legs. 

Als ich in der Stadt ankam, sprach mich ein Typ mit einem Kind in geschliffenem Englisch an. Er habe eine Schule und versuche Ausländer dazuzubringen mit seinen Studenten Englisch zu sprechen. Das würde sie am besten motivieren. Dafür würde er Nahrung und Unterkunft übernehmen... Ich überlegte eine Weile ob ich dem Typen trauen kann und suchte schliesslich sein Haus auf. 

When I arrived at the city. A men tried to speak with me with almost perfect english. He has a school and try to get travelers into his classroom to motivate his students to speak more english. This would be the biggest motivation for the kids. I was thinking about it and decided to join this project. 

Ich sagte zu, und fing an seine Schüler zu unterrichten. Wir sprachen über die Schweiz, Kultur, Reisen, Religion und das Leben. Ich war überrascht über die Offenheit der Kinder. Und genoss es, von ein paar der älteren Schüler auf den Töffs zu IHREN Plätzen gebracht zu werden. Hammer!

I agreed to speak a little bit with the students. We've spoke about Switzerland, cultur, traveling, religion and the live. I was surprised about the open ears of the students. Another highlight was to be taken around by the students. In this way they showed me THEIR places... 

Das Leben spielt sich oft in der Nähe der Häfen ab. Viele Schiffe kommen nach Dumai um Öl, Gas oder Palmölprodukte zu laden. 

A lot happens near the harbor. A lot of ships are coming here to take oil, gas or palmoil products. 

Egal wohin man geht. Fischen fasziniert!

Wherever I go. To go fishing is fascinating!

Persönlich: Der Platz gefällt mir sehr. Ich kann mit normalen Indonesiern herumhängen, Kinder unterrichten und Fischen gehen. Dabei esse, schlafe und lebe ich gleich wie sie... 

Personal: I like this place. I eat, sleep and live with the locals, while I "teach" some english. 

Plan A: Ich weiss es nicht. Ich realisiere, dass Indonesien ein Land zum entdecken ist. Ich brauche mehr Zeit als die gedachten 2-3 Wochen... 

PlanA: I don't know actually how to go on. I realize, indonesia is too big to stay here only for about 2-3 weeks. I need longer to discover this islands...
